Mark Trecka - The Bloom Of Performance

"The Bloom Of Performance" is the latest album from Paris-based musician, singer, sound artist, and writer Mark Trecka, released last month via Beacon Sound on cassette. This record is my introduction to his vast catalogue of solo projects and bands he's part of (all of which you can check out on Discogs). The press pack cites HTRK, Dirty Beaches, Circuit Des Yeux and David Bowie, among many others, as some of the nodes that may connect, or help to define the LP. And to describe it, I must admit, is a hard task, because "The Bloom Of Performance" is incredibly unique and effortlessly escaping simple labelling. Deconstructed avant-pop and post-punk influences hover over the whole album, with elements of dream pop and dark ambient interwoven throughout. Two records were constantly coming to my mind when listening to "The Bloom Of Performance": Low on "Double Negative" and Anohni's "Hopelessness" - not because of stylistic similarities, but Mark's daring experimentation with genres' status quo. Give it a spin.
