Murkla - Leviata

Murkla is the new alias of Swedish musician and composer Mattias Lagerkvist, best known for his other project Ekolali. On "Leviata" he delves deep into the realms of tape manipulation by employing layers of psych-ambient, walls of resounding drone and buzzing noise. The tape starts with a hypnagogic trip into a rainforest in the shape of "Earthdiver", then leads the listener further through spaced out tones of "Fish Scale Cloud" and deep drone prayers of "Pangea II", before landing at the feet of lo-fi tape mutations of "Shiny Beast". The following "Green Godless" starts with zoned out synth arpeggios that slowly morph into a cosmic odyssey of droning sounds, setting up the stage for "Leviata". The titular track, with its mesmeric swathes of melodic noise brings to mind works of Ben Frost - a visceral sonic experience that arguably is the most ambitious of the bunch, and one that should consume you entirely. The album makes a perfect loop with the ending composition "The Rain Song" that takes us back on the tribal path carved by the opening "Earthdiver". Fantastic tape, and a very high recommendation from me.
