Motion Colors - Genesis

Motion Colors is a new project of multi-disciplinary artist Andrew Reiersen. His debut EP "Genesis" came out today and it's a lush trip down the ambient-leaning wave lane. Ethereal and purposefully inaudible vocals and whispers give all the three tracks character, but it's the dreamy production that ties the release all together. Andrew's style is somewhere between "Wander / Wonder"-era Balam Acab (but in a beatless mode), emotional soundscape crafting of Makeup, and ambient-trance that has been often explored by Malibu, Sun Angels and Oklou. Love it, recommended!

Head Shoppe - // video

"Seance" is the latest video single from Head Shoppe, a new project from LA's Eric "Cashew" Harding. Mysterious melodies that feel like sourced from some forgotten library records, mixed with a pinch of French boutique music vibe and acoustic guitar strumming make this mellow psych-folk track a curious introduction to the upcoming self-titled LP that will come out on June 7th on Meadows Heavy Recorders.

Trials - 333

Here's a return from the grave. Trials were a witch-house duo from Wales that popped up on the url scene back when CRIM3S influences were all over the place. They did an album for Chilean label Equilateral Records, and then sort of disappeared. Until now. Last month they dropped this huge, 33-track mixtape that dives into their past and present, including original tracks as well as a ton of remixes. Something for everyone.

Download "333" for free here, and stream it all below.

STRFLL - Was It All Worth It Pt. III

STRFLL's "Was It All Worth It" becomes one of my fav contemporary witch house series, showcasig his range and eclectic influences with each subsequent release. Gloomy, noisy sludge. Love it. Grab it here and make sure to donate if you can.

Ghost Mirror - Possession

Ghost Mirror's "Possession" EP marks the launch of the new witch house netlabel Vertigo Cult. Echoes of twisted and mutated In Death It Ends filtered through MSV control board ripple from the speakers on track one, followed by a classic witch drag tune ("Exorcism") and a ghost drone remix of the original ("Prayer"). Good start. Get it here.

Posadas - Kyrie Eleison

Posadas is a duo from Dallas, TX. Their debut compilation "Kyrie Eleison", collecting a number of previously released singles and EPs, was released in October last year by Save State Records. Hyperpop / emo / witch house mashup that's both fun and chaotic.

yyycry - Blade Rain EP

yyycry is a witch house producer and vocalist from Dresden, Germany. Her debut EP "Blade Rain" came out earlier this year and it's definitely worth sharing with fans of all occultronica fans. Musically, yyycry manages to capture the spirit of witch house across the ages, her compositions sound both lo-fi and DIY while maintaining quality of arrangements and dripping with good melodies. It's the vocals that are chery on the cake here though, adding an extra layer of ethereal boost to the whole experience. Solid debut, looking forward to hear more. Fans of early IC3PEAK and Peachblack should check this out in a blink.

Download the EP here, and stream it in full below.

OKKVLT KΛTT - Mo Áthas

Epic. That's the word that comes to my mind after spending over three weeks with this album (to my delight) on my playlist. After a four year long hiatus, "Mo Áthas" marks the return of Mike Starita and his Okkvlt Katt project. He delivers his magnum opus for the newly minted label Séance. The record is a living proof of Mike's artistic growth, showcasing his honed craftsmanship and allowing a glimpse into some of the eclectic influences that impacted his sessions. Kicking off to the sound of cleansing rain, like washing off old sins and troubles, "Mo Áthas" heralds not only a new approach for the artist himself, but also delivers a breath of fresh air to the genre. It is a sonic statement that's both futuristic and deeply rooted in the folklore. Wonderful album from start to finish. Do no miss it.

Get "Mo Áthas" here, and stream it below.

German Army - Connaigre

Yet another album from the busiest underground outfit German Army. "Connaigre" marks the return of the band to Aught\Void, after their 2017 album "Tewa". Compositions on this record feel quite sparse, some give nod to minimal wave and drone soundscapes, but ultimately they stay within the obscure electronic niche that GeAr carved for themselves many years ago. Solid stuff.

Unfortunately the tapes sold out, but you can get the download for free here.

Haárps - Overdosed feat. Skaen // video

Here's the latest video from Ilya Arkhipov (aka Haárps) for his new alt-metal single "Overdosed". He employed the help of fellow producer Skaen, Mücahid on lead guitar, Konstantin Ter-Grigoryan on bass and Shamil Gadzhiev on drums. Not my cup of tea overall, takes me back to the early 00s when I was scanning MTV and VIVA for hip-hop clips only to face hours of alt-rock singles. It is, however, a step in a new direction after his previous LPs that were more rooted in electronic realm. "Overdosed" can be purchased here.

Montoya - Shame

Yet another sick track from Montoya, I swear I won't get tired of posting stuff from that dude because he always delivers good-mood music. Taking the atmospheric soundscape from Shlohmo's "Rock Music", he slaps on top of it those classic drums and murky rap, that all come together in form of a rad witch house tune. Dope.

Humanfobia - Ringu リング

For years now, the Chilean witch house duo Humanfobia has been championing the art of re-scoring and creating alternative soundtracks to some of Japanese most obscure as well as popular movies and series. Their latest mini-album "Ringu リング" is an hommage to the cult horror movie "Ring". Basking in the eerie and uncomfortable, the album is a sonic trip that intertwines and weaves various aspects of dark ambient, minimal witch house and Mist Spectras ghostly vocals, offering an aural equivalent of the supernatural VHS tape. Featuring stem contributions from Sonic Kitchen, Axis Project and DJ_ Iterate, Humanfobia's eight soundscapes will slowly and steadily seep from you speakers luring you into band's creepy world. Spooky soundtrack just in time for Easter.

Download the album here, and stream it below.

Curses - Elegant Death

Here's a pleasant surprise from Curses! "Elegant Death" is his new single promoting the upcoming album "Another Heaven", that will see the light of the day later this year thanks to Italians Do It Better. The morbid post-punk jam can be streamed here.

Uma Musk - Star City

Uma Musk is the latest alias of Swedish producer Robin Alexander Wikman, better known in the 2010s under his witchhouse name HOODOO. "Star City" is his debut album under the new name, embracing the 90s and 00s UK rave culture and mixing it with for the modern audiences. Junglist drums are paired with house keys and sped-up R&B vocal samples, creating a mix that resembles a bit Zomby's "Where Were You in 92", but with a more mainstream (in a good way) feel. Echoes of bassline wobbles, garage beats and dubstep-y bass are also present, giving the whole record a proper throwback feel and a tribute to the UK bass scene.

Get the album here, and stream it in full below.

STRFLL - Emotional Instability Mixtape

Séance label is on the roll, with a new and full of exclusives mixtape from STRFLL. Featuring tracks from the man himself as well as Salem, CR33KY, White Ring, Three Wishes and D040, it's a 17-minute trip into the latest trends and anti-trends in the dark electronic music. Stream here.

Montoya - Fading Faster

February drop from Montoya, that I somehow slept on. "Fading Faster" is a four-track EP that's built on syrrupy rap and witch house beats that bounce off guitar samples and southern hip-hop beat arrangements. As always a solid dose of music from an artist that has quickly carved his own niche and style. Full support!

Buy the EP here and steam it below.

Blue Rita - Vampires In The Night EP

Yet another surprise EP from Phantasma Disques, I have a strong feeling Blue Rita may be a secret side project of Cosmotropia de Xam... The original version is an upbeat pop-ish italo-disco track that's ok I guess, but it's the MSV remix that shines here, dragging the vocals down a bit and adding layers of those reverbed drumms.

You can but both tracks here and stream them after the jump.

Проклятая Реальность - Черная Магия

"Черная Магия" is a russian folk/witch EP from the depths of Phantasma Disques mind. Fans of IC3PEAK, Poleja Uvoda and Navji Cary should appreciate it. Mix of singing, rapping, bass vibes and ethereal electronic folk music.

Get the EP here, stream below.

Thursday 21 March 2024

Bloodbeak - Vibrofolk

Bloodbeak is the latest side-project of the busiest DJ in the dark electronic scene, Mike Textbeak. Released on tape via Clan Destine Records, his debut EP "Vibrofolk", channels mutant screwed EBM sounds, with support from his pals Rose Nivak and Metastasio. Twisted and corrupted electronic music.

Buy the tape here, stream as always down below.

Mark Trecka - The Bloom Of Performance

"The Bloom Of Performance" is the latest album from Paris-based musician, singer, sound artist, and writer Mark Trecka, released last month via Beacon Sound on cassette. This record is my introduction to his vast catalogue of solo projects and bands he's part of (all of which you can check out on Discogs). The press pack cites HTRK, Dirty Beaches, Circuit Des Yeux and David Bowie, among many others, as some of the nodes that may connect, or help to define the LP. And to describe it, I must admit, is a hard task, because "The Bloom Of Performance" is incredibly unique and effortlessly escaping simple labelling. Deconstructed avant-pop and post-punk influences hover over the whole album, with elements of dream pop and dark ambient interwoven throughout. Two records were constantly coming to my mind when listening to "The Bloom Of Performance": Low on "Double Negative" and Anohni's "Hopelessness" - not because of stylistic similarities, but Mark's daring experimentation with genres' status quo. Give it a spin.

You can buy the tapes here. Stream the album below.

Party Trash - Illusions

I can't believe I haven't blogged about Party Trash yet, Joe for well over a decade has been making some of the most incredible and diverse music out there, and the PT project is my absolute favourite of his. His latest album came out in February and is titled "Illusions". It's an amazing collage of synthwave, juke beats, house tempos, IDM unpredictability, leftfield hip-hop instrumentals and ambient soundscapes. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Download the album here, stream below.

STRFLL - Singles Part II

Estonia's finest export STRFLL returned last month with a second collection of Soundcloud one-offs in the shape of "Singles Part II". I've reviewed a couple of those gems as he was posting them on his page, but in the context of a "compilation album" the do feel cohesive bunched together, which is a proof of STRFLL's style. The opening two tracks are my absolute favourite, but those keys in "Doin better" also hit the sweet spot. The whole compilation feels almost like an album, the only track I'm not feeling is "Killa" with its high pitched synths (I do like the drums and the bass work there tho).

Grab the DL here, and stream all 8 tracks below.

Zlutz - Nevermind

Hypertrance nugget from Brighton's Zlutz. One of all the sped up kids out there. Get it here.

British Museum - Satan Is A Roof Over My Head

Wanda Group aka Louis Johnstone is back on the physical releases market with this a new album under yet another new alias British Museum. "Satan Is A Roof Over My Head" consists of sixteen joints that ebb away from his recent abstract and outsider music pieces, and instead lean more towards more meditative and melodic (in a way) musique concrete. It's still full-on collage mode, but the album feels easy listening in all its obscurity. Trilogy Tapes put this one out, the cassettes are gone now but you can help yourself to a download, which Louis serves on his Bandcamp.

Grab it here, stream after the jump.

Ophidian - Butterfly (Deti Khaosa Remix)

Deti Khaosa is a new alias for Paris based musician Thomas Levée, probably best known for his projects Bedtime Stories and [lyn]. For his debut release he flips Ophidian's gabber banger "Butterfly" and turns it into a multilayered hard techno composition, interwoven with ambient soundscapes and jungle drums for occasional mid-track interludes. Those calmer moments will let you zone out before being hit again by the sonic assault served in this 6min+ club-oriented pill. Get the track here, and follow DK on Soundcloud here.

Hannya White - Silver Cowboy

Hannya White is a producer and composer from south London, with a couple of EPs and a tape on Berlin-based label Staaltape behind her belt. Her latest single "Silver Cowboy" is a surreal collage of deconstructed footwork beats, noise experimentation and simple-yet-bizarre spoken word. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but purveyors of hardcore Lynchian oddities and avant-noise should feel like home. Buy the track here.

Thursday 14 March 2024

OKKVLT KΛTT - Amhrán Na Leabhar

What an amazing return, Mike is back with this 3-track single for Séance label, promoting his upcoming album "Mo Áthas". Leaning into folklore-inspired witch house that may bring to mind works of Poleja Uvoda and Navji Cary, the lead single features unnamed vocalist that lures you into Katt's cinematic world of soundscapes, shattering cliche witch house tropes and morphing in front of our eyes (and ears) as the song progresses. I am so grateful we got the instrumental version in this pack, because the arrangements, melody and songwriting is top notch here and should be experienced and appreciated on its own. The b-side "Dianthus" is equally captivating, more noisier and grittier than the lead single, but worth four minutes of your time for sure. Epic stuff.

Get it here, stream down below.

Wednesday 13 March 2024

Akira Kintsugi - DJSET_永恆的0308_1049-1216

Sick, almost 90-minute long dragged mixtape from JC from Ritualz Diego de Regil (fka Drugs for Drunks), under his alias Akira Kintsugi. Warped, slow-mo edits of radio rock classics, hip-hop beats and rap oddities, this one will take you back to the unpredictable era of witchhouse-fuckery. Stream here.

Old Amica - Debris Sides

Released last month, "Debris Sides" is a companion piece to Old Amica's debut album "Debris" from 2011 (sadly not on Bandcamp, try iTunes for now). Consisting of five tracks that didn't make the cut for the final version of the LP a decade earlier, the EP is a truly wonderful treat for the fans of the duo. Threading between folk, post rock and ambient soundscapes, with soothing melodies and wonderfully planned arrangements, Old Amica managed to capture and revive some of the magic of that bygone era. A special and comfortably warm project, recommended!

Download the EP here, and stream it down below.

Nora Nygard - I Wish I Could See You

Ambient epic from Nora Nygard (Saint Paul, MN), a 40-minute culmination of her five-year exploration and (in her own words) dedication to the genre. A sonic response to doom, loss, and grief, "I Wish I Could See You" is a slowly unravelling odyssey that effortlessly glides through the ocean of ambient synth soundscapes and droning cosmic tones. Put the headphones one, lean back in you chair, hit press and start the spaceship engines with this one.

The album is out now via Little Sisyphus, and can be downloaded here. Stream in full above.

Carlos Ferreira - Isolationism

Carlos Ferreira is an experimental guitarist and composer based in Porto Alegre, Brazil, whose work explores the relationship between sound, space, time, and memory. His most recent album "Isolationism", released last October via AKP Recordings, harvests fruits of his research and encapsules them in the form of eight compositions. From delicate guitar strumming backed with escapist field recordings and meditative drone vibrations, through warped library tones that sound like they crawled from a detuned music box, all the way to calming ambient piano pieces and dark-tinted droning waves, Ferreira manages to balance and form all those influences into a surprisingly cohesive record. It's a slow burning album that reveals and rewards with every subsequent listen.

You can buy the tapes here, and stream the album below.

Roxane Barrow - Make Money

Raw minimal electronics from France. Roxane Barrow is a duo formed by MP-57 and Roxane in October 2023. Their concept is to use drum machines, analog synthesizers, effects and a mic, all in one take straight into a tape without computer editing. The effect is honest and catchy in its minimalism, "Make Money" should appeal to all the fans of coldwave, stripped house and EBM.

Get their tape here, and stream below.

Videl - 10 Golden Witch Hits

Ten dragged pop hits straight from Videl's twisted head brought to the world via Conjvre the Circle label. Very fucking cool stuff, especially the first half of the album is solid as hell. Trapped out "Jolean" is one to zone out to, and the Crystal Castles flip "Don'trustus" is epic in its slow-mo version. From Snoop's track onwards the streak is a bit weaker. Worth checking out though.

Get the album here for $3, stream below.

Monday 4 March 2024

SeBlack - Primera Perspectiva

SeBlack is an alias of Sebastián Quiroga from Chille. "Primera Perspectiva" is his second project for EK4T3, after the excellent EP "Karma" from 2020, and I can confidently say it's a natural follow-up to that release. The suspensful dark ambience, thumping beats, spaced-out synths all whirled into dark electronic mix of emotions that sound like a hardcore alien rave. Amazing stuff.

Download the EP here, and stream it after the jump.

Sunday 3 March 2024

Murkla - Leviata

Murkla is the new alias of Swedish musician and composer Mattias Lagerkvist, best known for his other project Ekolali. On "Leviata" he delves deep into the realms of tape manipulation by employing layers of psych-ambient, walls of resounding drone and buzzing noise. The tape starts with a hypnagogic trip into a rainforest in the shape of "Earthdiver", then leads the listener further through spaced out tones of "Fish Scale Cloud" and deep drone prayers of "Pangea II", before landing at the feet of lo-fi tape mutations of "Shiny Beast". The following "Green Godless" starts with zoned out synth arpeggios that slowly morph into a cosmic odyssey of droning sounds, setting up the stage for "Leviata". The titular track, with its mesmeric swathes of melodic noise brings to mind works of Ben Frost - a visceral sonic experience that arguably is the most ambitious of the bunch, and one that should consume you entirely. The album makes a perfect loop with the ending composition "The Rain Song" that takes us back on the tribal path carved by the opening "Earthdiver". Fantastic tape, and a very high recommendation from me.

You can order the tape here, and stream the album in full below.

How To Dress Well - New Confusion / No Light

The legendary lo-fi R'n'B bard Tom Krell is returning with a new album! "I Am Toward You" will come out May 10th, but in the meantime we get a double A single "New Confusion / No Light". Some distortion that (beautifully) defined his previous LP "The Anteroom" is still there, but those new tracks lean more into the pop territory that HTDW explored on his second and third record. Can't wait for more.

Vidchajj - I'm Trapped Inside My Head

Here's a new noise-bass / witch-shoegaze single from Vidchajj, absolute gem. Stream here.

G.R. Zombie - Palo Santo

Maxi single from GR Zombie, featuring his alterego Xombiemane on vocals. Horrorcore/phonk/witchhouse all mashed into three dark rap tracks. Support and buy them here.

Filmy Ghost & The Implicit Order - Horrorlands

Excellent collaborative album from Humanfobia's Filmy Ghost and The Implicit Order. "Horrorlands", an eerie journey into the world of dark ambient, witch house, experimental electronic music and screwed drone, was originally released in 2022 via Humanfobia's own label Internet Daemon, but now it got a complete reissue with bonus intro and outro produced by TIO. In the words of Anthony: "In 2022 Sábila Orbe AKA Filmy Ghost cut-up and rearranged I/O's entire discography in a wonderful and creepy out of this world way." Nuff said, great record from start to finish, highly recommended.

Download the album for free here.
